Why accepting temp work is a smart move?? We often get candidates who are a little hesitant to accept a temp job whilst they are focused on finding a permanent opportunity.  They’re worried if they commit to something short-term, they will miss out on a long term opportunity.

You can understand why this might be a concern. However, there is a growing trend within the property sector of employers who want to “try before you buy”.  Here are some things to bear in mind:

  • The employer has a chance to see you in action

Your professionalism and enthusiasm will be evident to the employer resulting in the possibility that you could force them to change their thinking and seek to hold on to you for an extended period

  • It can often lead to something long-term

There is a great chance that if a candidate performs well during the temporary period that an employer will be impressed enough to actually offer the person a job on a permanent basis.

  • Opportunities after you’ve left

If they have any vacancies after you’ve left, you may be the first point of call for them as you already have experience with that organisation.

  • Temp work could be great for you CV

It’s potentially better than having a gap on your CV and if you perform well in the role they may be happy to provide you with a great reference.

So, if you are offered a temp position and you’re hesitant about whether it’s worth considering, ask a few more questions. Find out whether there’s any chance of the role being extended and enquire about whether they have ever converted temporary roles into full time positions in the past.  Try to establish what a permanent opportunity there would look like and whether this would appeal to you. Asking these questions could impress the employer as you are showing your desire to work for them and you are taking it seriously.
